Applicants who believe they qualify for one of the three classes mentioned above can apply online, and their application will constitute an “expression of interest.” An applicant who demonstrates eligibility for at least one of these classes will enter the express entry “pool.” At periodic intervals, applicants in the pool will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for immigration to Canada on the basis of eligibility for one of the three classes. The decision to issue an ITA is made by the federal government. In addition, the federal government has implemented a category-based express entry selection protocol. Specific categories have been created to address identified economic priorities. Top-ranking candidates in the express entry pool who are eligible for an established category are invited to apply for permanent residence status. These categories are based on criteria of education, ability to communicate in a specific official language and work experience in a specific occupation. For 2023, there are six categories: – French-language proficiency – healthcare occupations – science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations – trade occupations – transport occupations – agriculture and agri-food occupations
Provincial nominee programs are primarily directed at selecting skilled workers whose qualifications are particularly suited to the needs of a particular provincial economy.
